In April 1983 GIANNIS D loaded in the Croatian port of Rijeka by wooden logs. Part must be delivered to the Saudi port of Jeddah, and the rest  unload in Yemen. It was a bright spring morning. Mooring given included the autopilot and the ship went on autopilot on the Adriatic.

Traditionally, the voyage to the azure waters of the Adriatic and Mediterranean countries was supposed to be monotonous and calm. As in many other countries, the Egyptian government is carefully inspecting every ship entering their territorial waters. All, like, was quiet, although the Arab-Israeli war continued. Customs officials would only confirm that a country under the guise of cargo transports are not any contraband or weapons. After numerous tests and countless paperwork GIANNIS D finally received permission to enter the Channel

GIANNIS D briskly approached the Straits of Suez and coral reefs. The islands were clearly visible, but the treacherous reefs, hidden under the water.

The captain knew the local waters and have no intention of trusting his young officers of the navigation. Going familiar course, all the time he checked the instrument readings. Exhausted, he was convinced that it is properly understood and went to rest.

SHAB ABU NUHAS – a magnificent coral reef, which can be achieved only with the surface and which is not visible from a distance and all. This reef is situated on the edge of the Strait Goba (Strait of Gobal). This north-western part of the Red Sea, where begins the Suez Channel. For ships, the following course of Suez, SHAB ABU NUHAS – the very last obstacle before going to sea.

The captain, being fully assured that all danger behind and ahead of only the port of Jeddah after 600 miles, went calmly into the cockpit and immediately fell asleep. He miscalculated badly! Some time later he was awakened – at full speed GIANNIS D crashed into the north-western part of the reef.

It was April 19, 1983. April 22, 1983 the company, Lloyd has published a report:

The Greek vessel GIANNIS D Peck went out with a cargo of sawn planks in the ports of Jeddah and Hodeidah, was wrecked on the reef SHAB ABU NUHAS. Approximate coordinates of 27-35 N, 33-56 E . The  team left the ship and was temporarily transported to the Egyptian platform Santa Fe, from where it was taken on a helicopter in Ras Shoke.

By the time of publication in London reports, GIANNIS D nothing could help.

GIANNIS D

GIANNIS D was built in shipyards Kuryshima Dock Company in Japan. Dry cargo ship has two large bays for goods. Its dimensions are 99.5 h x16m. 6 cylinder engine was also made in Japan. The ship could develop a speed of 12 knots.

GIANNIS D walked under its original name until 1975. Then it was resold and changed his name to MARCOS D. There is evidence that even now you can find and read the name on board the ship. Sometimes there are rumors of a sunken ship by that name, but such a ship no longer existed – being oversold again in 1980, a Greek company, the ship received the name GIANNIS D

Now GIANNIS D under the water represents the three separate sections. Beautifully looks part of the bridge. On the ship;s pipe can find the letter D. It is easy to get to the engine room. In the sandy bottom it is  a large screw.
